Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach tells team to endure the heat

Tampa Bay Buccaneers' first-year head coach Lovie Smith experienced the scorching hot weather in Florida last Monday for their training camp. That is the reason why, he want the Bucs to prepare themselves to face the heat of Florida which would reach up to 100 degrees.

He has constructed a practice plan that will have the players accustomed to the type of weather that they will soon be facing when they play the home games for this season.

According to Smith "The heat in Tampa is no joke. We'll be playing (regular-season games), of course, at this time, so we have to practice along these lines. Hot days like today when the heat index is up there, we'll never put the players at risk. We'll take as many water breaks as we need to and kind of watch them. But the guys have been working hard getting used to this environment with the pads on."

The Bucs had their day off yesterday and but head coach is expecting that there will be some players who will squeeze in extra time. He said "Just like it says, 'day off' - do whatever you like. "(The coaches are) going to come in to work and you're always looking ahead. We're looking ahead. We have so much in front of us."

Among the players that Smith is harnessing is Jeff Demps. Demps has been called "fastest man in the NFL" and Smith is planning to find a way to utilize that skill. Demps said "I'm just kind of everywhere right now, just trying to get in where I fit in and whenever my number is called I'm just trying to get on the field and make something happen."

On the other hand, CB Alterraun Verner has been limited on his training due to a hamstring injury. He said that he is excited to be with the Buccaneers but won't try to compare himself to Darrelle Revis. He said "It's not something I'm overly caught up on. You should never be trying to replace somebody or try to play and be like somebody else, you have got to play within yourself and that's something that I learned through the years."
