Saturday's boxing fight between Brandon Rios and Diego Chaves was not your usual boxing match.
Brandon Rios won over Diego Chaves via a DQ (Disqualification) Victory during last Saturday's HBO fight at The Cosmopolitan. Rios was sent to the hospital right after the match so that he can be checked for possible corneal abrasion as well as shoulder injury.
According to Rios "He kept sticking his glove right into my eye."
Both players were deducted scores to their scorecard. Rios had a point deducted in the fifth round while Chaves had points deducted in the third and seventh round. The fight was stopped during the ninth of the ten round welterweight fight when Chaves threw an elbow on top Rios face.
Disregarding the fouls, it was a good match. Both fighters were throwing good punches with Chaves was doing very well using his speed to work on his advantage. Rios on the other hand was the more aggressive boxer. He threw heavier punches landing excellent body shots.
But referee Vic Drakulich quickly lost control of the fight. He was having trouble trying to stop the fight as the fighters were not listening to him.
The chairman of the commission ,Francisco Aguilar said that he would be meeting with Drakulich as well as with Bob Bennett, the executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission to review the match.
Aguilar said "Vic early on tried to set a standard in that fight between these two fighters. This was not a boxing match; this was a brawl. They were there to brawl. Vic tried to take control of that fight by deducting the points, whether or not you agree that point was appropriate. He was trying to get control and as the fight went on, he was losing that control."
He added "I don't think either corner had respect for the authority in that ring. That is my concern. When he went in there to lay down the law, they were not listening. That fight was disintegrating to a point where it could become dangerous."
Benett was also in the same page with Drakulich saying that he made the right call to stop the fight when Rios was elbowed in the ninth round.
He said "If it's an egregious, intentional foul, you're able to take two points as one of your options. The second option is that you can be DQ'd automatically for an intentional, egregious foul. Vic, I thought, provided a great deal of patience and attempted to control that fight."
"But as chairman Aguilar said, it was more of a rumble than a fight."
