After it debuted in China with a whopping $5.6M, the sequel now has crossed the half a billion mark in global grosses. The film which has been raved by many and said to be better than the original has already surpassed other big animation releases like "Rio 2" ($496M) and "The LEGO Movie" ($468M).

Scott Mendelson in his Forbes column, talked about the sequel's box office success:

"How to Train Your Dragon 2 is a hit, plain-and-simple. It may not have made as much as I was hoping for, but it has tripled its budget and may-well quadruple it before it's done. The best animated feature of the year is now the highest-grossing one as well. That's gotta count for something."

But despite it's success, the movie can't please everyone- at least not all parents.

Surprisingly, some parents didn't like the movie's "dark themes," and wouldn't recommend it to children. Some parents have expressed their opinions on Common Sense Media.

One parent called the movie "intense" and "scary."

"This movie is visually stunning and has an interesting story line, but is intense and pretty scary for most of the movie... I did make the mistake of taking my 6-year-old son, who was not quite ready for the intensity of the story line. He told me he wasn't scared, but I could see on his face that it was too much."
