Angel di Maria who just recently transferred to Manchester United dished out that his former team, Real Madrid, sent out a letter to him during the day of the World Cup Finals telling him not to play at the Finals. Di Maria played for Argentina where they faced and lost to Germany in the finals.
Di Maria just inked a deal worth £59.7 million ($98 million, 75 million euros) with the Man U. This sets a new British transfer record.
According to di Maria "A letter from Madrid arrived at 11 in the morning on the day of the final saying that I should not play. I tore it up; I didn't give it a second thought. I spoke to Alejandro Sabella (the then Argentinian coach) and he didn't want me to suffer from the fallout, but I said to him I would do everything in my power to be fit."
Di Maria helped Argentina win the game against Germany in a friendly match which sets the record goal 4-2 victory.
According to him, the letter he received really upset him saying "I suffered a lot on the morning of the final. It was the worst possible thing which could happen in my life, however these are the sort of things sent to test you."
According to him, playing for his country is more important to him. He said "What I like the best is to join up with the national squad, no matter the importance of the match, I want to be part of it."
He also said that Real Madrid claiming that he left the club because of money was garbage. He said "They (Real) can say what they want about me, but the millions they got for me were very welcome for the Real finances. I never said that I wanted to leave, I didn't want to. The players and the fans supported me but the club's only desire was to sell me."
In an open letter to Madrid sports daily Marca he wrote "Unfortunately, today I have to leave, but I want to make it clear that was never my wish."
