Nick Diaz training partner and top UFC lightweight contender Gilbert Melendez recently talked to MMA Weekly to share his thoughts about the nearing fight between Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz.
Former middleweight champion Anderson Silva would be returning to the octagon with a fight against Nick Diaz. It can be remembered that Silva suffered a horrible leg injury during his rematch fight with Chris Weidman at UFC 168. On the other hand, Diaz was also on hiatus for more than a year now after losing to then-welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre in March 2013.
According Melendez, the Silva-Diaz fight is a win-win situation not just for the sports but also for the fans and promoters as well.
He said "There's not too many times in the sport where everyone is a winner, and the fans, by far, are the winners. Nick's a winner in this situation. I think this is a great fight for him to come back to and a fight that he's wanted. He's fighting one of the greatest of all time, or the greatest of all time at an upper weight."
He added "Anderson is coming back. He's fighting a guy who is probably not a kicker, which is probably a good thing," added The Ultimate Fighter 20 head coach. "And I'm pretty sure Dana (White) and Lorenzo (Fertitta) are happy with this situation. They got Nick Diaz back in the cage, and he's not fighting for a title. It's a huge fight. Obviously it's going to make a lot of money. I think it's great for the sport. I think everyone's a winner in this situation."
On the other hand, Silva is excited to be facing Diaz inside the octagon. He said "I never thought in my career that I would face Nick Diaz. He's a guy that I've watched all of his fights. He's got great jiu-jitsu, and this fight has all the ingredients to be one of the best fights of all time. This fight is going to be excellent for the fans. This is going to be excellent for myself, and for Nick Diaz as well. We both haven't stepped in the Octagon for quite a while."
