Actor Joo Sang Wook is considering a role in the upcoming makeover drama tentatively titled "Birth of a Beauty." Drawing some inspiration from the George Bernard Shaw play "Pygmalion," that later became the film "My Fair Lady," it's the story of a man who makes over a woman into his image of the ideal female. The makeover is so successful that the hero falls in love with his creation.
Joo, who recently appeared in the romantic comedy "Cunning Single Lady," will play a volatile man named Han Tae Hee. The heir to a conglomerate, Han Tae Hee is a man who was traumatized by a broken heart. Fortunately, he finds a mission that gives him a reason to get up in the morning. He decides to help an unhappy unattractive woman transform herself into a beauty. The woman diets and loses weight and then she has plastic surgery to improve her features. Her new appearance gives her a new chance at life and romance. But her transformation also raises some interesting questions. If a man is attracted to her will he love her for her fake exterior or for her inner beauty? If he loves her for her looks, does he really love her?
It may turn out to be both, as Han Tae Hee cannot help but fall for his own creation, the woman he helped transform into a beauty. And he knew her before she had the work done.
When he first read the script the actor found the quirky plot appealing.
"As soon as I received the scenario, I was drawn to the unique character and story," said Joo Sang Wook.
And it's going to be a comedy. "Birth of a Beauty" is going to be the actor's second romantic comedy in a 17-year career. He was not sure he could do comedy but he enjoyed his role in "Cunning Single Lady" and won praise for his portrayal of a divorced man with a grudge. So, he's happy to try another comedy.
Besides being drawn to an interesting script, the actor has also previously worked with director Lee Chang Min on the drama "Giant." Lee also directed, "Midas," "Bride of the Sun," "My Lover" and "Madam Butterfly." Writer Yoon Young Mi, who worked on "A Tale of Two Sisters," "Bride of the Sun" and "A Well Grown Daughter," will write the screenplay.
The drama is set to air in November following the end of "Endless Love."
