So often, stories about actress Gu Hye Sun will start out with the line, “is there anything she can’t do?” She may very well be the most multi-talented star in the k-drama world.
Besides being an actress, she has her own film production company. She’s an author, an illustrator, a director and a singer. And she does not just sing other people’s songs. She composes the melodies and writes the lyrics for her own songs.
And now she has released her seventh single, titled “Must,” which also features Choi In Young. The song was written while she was working on her recent film, “Daughter.” Gu Hye Sun wrote and directed the film about the evolving relationship between a mother and daughter. The daughter in the film wants to establish her own identity and come out from her mother’s shadow but this separation cannot happen without some conflict and pain. Gu Hye Sun plays the daughter in the film and Shim Hye Jin, last seen in “Spring Days” and “a Secret Love Affair” plays her mother.
The music and lyrics of “Must” reflect the pain in the mother-daughter relationship. The evocative and haunting song expresses the emotions surrounding a parting that takes place in the film.
“Daughter” was invited to the recent 2014 Busan International Film Festival and the film premieres on Dec. 6. It is Gu Hye Sun’s third feature-length film.
Her last drama role was in the weekend drama “Angel Eyes.” In that drama Gu Hye Sun played a blind woman whose sight is restored after an operation. After she becomes an EMT, she once again meets her lost love. Gu Hye Sun has appeared in several dramas, including “The Musical” and “Take Care of Us Captain,” but her most famous drama role was that of the feisty Geum Jan Di in “Boys Over Flowers.” Her character stood up to the four spoiled rich boys that ran the school.
Gu Hye Sun’s original dream was to be a singer and she almost became part of the popular group 2NE1. She had a band in college then went into modeling. But after signing with YG Entertainment she was persuaded to try acting first.
That was good advice as she successfully managed to realize her dream—and even more dreams—that way.
What do you think of her new single? Does it inspire you to see the film that inspired it?
