"The Thieves" Becomes Korea's Most Watched Domestic Movie… 13.02 Million Tickets Sold

It has been 70 days since the movie premiered and 6 years since "The Host" broke the record the last time.

"The Thieves" (directed by Choi Dong Hoon) became Korea's most successful movie on October 2nd.

Show Box, the investing distributor for "The Thieves" announced that on October 2nd around 2 pm, the movie recorded 13,023,930 million tickets sold breaking the record set in 2006 by director Bong Joon Ho's "The Host" with 13,019,740 tickets sold.

The record was broken in 70 days. 6 years ago, "The Host" took 106 days to break the previous record.

"The Thieves" premiered on July 25th and sold 500,000 tickets in 10 days and showed off its explosive popularity as it sold 1 million tickets in 22 days.

The movie is still being screened in 76 theaters in Korea.

According to the Korean Film Council's Movie Theater Tickets Integrated Network recorded that the movie earned 93,561,965,000 won (around $840 million). The total earnings for "The Host" was 78.5 billion won while the total earnings for "Haeundae" was a total of 81.9 billion won.

The foreign movie with the most tickets sold in Korea is Hollywood blockbuster film, "Avatar" with 13,624,328 tickets sold. Since Avatar uniquely premiered in 3D so it set a tough record to break with 128.4 billion won in total earnings.
