'Running Man' Star Kim Jong Kook Will Release A Solo Album

On February 2, the Korean outlet TV Daily announced that Kim Jong Kook of “Running Man” fame was in the midst of recording a solo album.

According to an English report on Soompi, a representative for his agency stated, “He is currently preparing for his solo album to celebrate his 20th year as a singer.” The report when on to state that he may release an extended play album in the first portion of the year, followed by a full-length studio album.

The variety show star is renown for his Korean music performances as part of the duo, Turbo. The announcement of his solo release comes on the heels of rumors surrounding a reunion of Turbo. Turbo successfully performed during the recent '90s episodes of "Infinite Challenge" which revitalized interest in their music

Turbo was created in 1994 as a competitor the K-pop act, Deux. Turbo also included Kim Jung Nam, a former DJ.

Their hits “Black Cat” and “Decision” helped to catapult Turbo into fame. Turbo added a third member, Mikey, in 1997 prior to their collaboration with American star Will Smith on the Asian version of “Just the Two of Us.”

Kim Jong Kook began his solo career in 2001 with the album “Volume 1- Renaissance.” In 2005, he was the recipient of the Daesang or Best Artist of the Year from MBC, KBS, and SBS for his release “This is Me.”

He is considered a consummate entertainer due to the combination of his music career with his variety show appearances which have included the programs “Family Outing” and his recurring role on “Running Man.” He is currently part of the ensemble cast of the Chinese film version of “Running Man” which opened in North American theaters on January 30.

Audiences in the U.S. had the opportunity to see him with Haha during the recent Running Man Bros. Tour. He will return to New York City for the DramaFever Awards which will be held at Hudson Theatre on Thursday, February 5.
