On February 28, the producers of “Blood” addressed recent concerns surrounding the quality of acting delivered by Gu Hye Sun. The actress has faced harsh criticism from netizens for her performance as Yoo Ri Ta, a blood specialist, at a hospital dedicated to cancer treatment. Critics have focused on the mannerisms Gu has used in her portrayal of Ri Ta and her off-kilter annunciation of words which resembles an American attempting to deliver an affected British accent.
In an article published by Star News, a representative for the production company ROK Media, addressed the issues viewers have expressed surrounding “Blood.” The article called the main statement by the representative which was, “Gu Hye Sun's acting controversy is unfortunate...it will be changing.”
The representative also said, “We didn't expect there to be so much controversy over Gu Hye Sun's acting in the drama.”
The representative went on to justify her unusual vocal pattern as a deliberate move by the actress to, “exaggerate with her lines to fit her character Yoo Ri Ta.”
The drama replaced “Healer” but has struggled with ratings since its premier. While this recent statement by producers addresses the acting performance of the show's female lead, it does not address criticism that has been launched against Ahn Jae Hyun. “Blood” has served as the actor's first starring role, following his beloved performances in “My Love From The Stars” and “You're All Surrounded.”
“Blood” incorporates an unique story line but the dialogue is a bit lacking. While vampire tales are common, the drama has brought in the the plot device of capitalism within the pharmaceutical industry, drawing on contemporary stories like“True Blood.”
Fans expressed their disappointment with the acting in “Blood” through comments on Netizen Buzz. One of the topic comments on the forum was, “She could tone down her voice a notch and it wouldn't be so bad.”
