Hwang Jung Eum Doesn't Think She Looks Pretty When She Cries

The May 23 episode of the KBS program "Entertainment Relay," featured an insightful interview with actress Hwang Jung Eum. During the segment, the 30-year-old K-pop idol-turned-actress expressed her displeasure with her appearance during crying scenes.

In the interview, she admitted that she works harder on her acting and scenes where she is required to cry. After receiving criticism for her performance skills, she dedicated herself to perfecting her craft. "I have to work harder because I used to be a singer," she told "Entertainment Relay."

The reporter then asked her about her current status as the Queen of Tears. She acknowledged that she likes the nickname, which recognizes her convincing and heartfelt performances. However, she is not comfortable with watching compilations which only focus on her crying scenes.

She discussed a scenario where she was asked by a director to watch her crying scenes. "But I look like a monster," she said.

After expressing her displeasure, she pointed out that the scenes carried the correct emotions, even if she did not look pretty while she was crying.

Hwang Jung Eum debuted in 2002 with the K-pop group, Sugar. In 2004, she departed from the group to pursue a solo career. She experienced her acting debut in as Mi So in the 2005 SBS series, "Princess Lulu." Her role in the 2010 '70s period drama, "Giant" led to sequent starring roles in series including "Can You Heart My Heart."

In 2013, she starred opposite Ji Sung in the melodrama "Secret Love." The on-screen couple reunited in 2015 for the hit psychological drama, "Kill Me, Heal Me."

On the May 16 episode of "Entertainment Relay," Hwang confirmed the end of her 9-year relationship with SG Wannabe member Kim Yong Jun.
