Cavaliers superstar Lebron James missed the game-winning shot during the first game of 2015 NBA finals against the Golden State Warriors. During overtime, Kyrie Irving fell to injury and will miss the rest of the games.
Losing its second best player will make it even harder for the Cavaliers to keep up with an offensive juggernaut, led by current MVP Stephen Curry and his splash brother, Kyle Thompson.
Is this part of the Cleveland sports curse?
The New York Times ran an article referencing the Cleveland sports curse after 147 straight seasons without a title from its three major teams, the Cavaliers, the Browns of the NFL and the Indians of the Major League Baseball.
Universally recognized as the best player in the world, Lebron James and the Cavaliers have the best chance of ending Cleveland's sports curse during the 2015 NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors. After all, the two-time MVP led his team to a championship in just his first year after his homecoming.
He also appeared in the NBA finals for five consecutive years.
"Might it all have been different had he not settled for a step-back jumper? Might he have spared Irving the injury by saving the Cavs from overtime? Part of the deal is being left to wonder," another NY Times article written by Harvey Araton said.
But ESPN said that the pressure is off Lebron James now for the NBA finals 2015 after Kyrie Irving suffered the injury.
"There is only upside left for him: If the Cavaliers lose, you can't pin this on LeBron," the article said. "But if the Warriors remain intact and the Cavaliers win, it will be one of the greatest achievements in the history of the NBA. They'd have to make an extra Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP trophy for LeBron, as well as an additional ring, because this would count as double."
