If there is anything Song Joong Ki likes better than acting or his friends Jo In Sung and Lee Kwang Soo, it is baseball.
He's often seen wearing a baseball cap and it's not just a fashion statement. He's a big fan of the Hanhwa Eagles, a South Korean professional baseball club based in the city of Daejon.
On Sept. 5 the actor gets to throw out the first pitch for his favorite baseball team when they play the Doosan Bears at Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejon.
One of the reasons that Song Joong Ki is such a big fan of the Hanhwa Eagles is that he's from Daejon, Korea's fifth largest metropolis. He likes baseball in general but he really likes the Hanwha Eagles.
At his 2015 military discharge ceremony reporters asked him what sustained him during his military duty. Was it a girl group? His family? Song mentioned the support he got from his friends, especially staying in touch with actor Lee Kwang Soo, but he also spoke about the joys of watching baseball.
"I like baseball, so I watched games regularly," said Song. "Hanhwa, the team I support, had good results, so that also gave me strength too."
It won't be the first time that the actor and former speed skater pitched an opening ball at a baseball game. He threw the ceremonial pitch at a 2011 game involving the LG Twins. For that occasion he wore an LG Twins uniform.
Only this time he will pitch for his favorite team.
The Hanwha Eagles game will provide Song Joong Ki with a nice break from preparations for his upcoming drama. Song and actress Song Hye Kyo will co-star in "Descendants of the Sun."
In "Descendants Of The Sun" he plays an officer with the United Nations special peacekeeping forces. His character is the kind of man who has to make life and death decisions without any sentimentality. Song Hye Kyo plays a surgeon who works with an international charity. The humanitarian organization delivers medical care to those affected by disasters. The two characters meet and fall in love while caught up in terrible circumstances.
The drama will air in late 2015 or early 2016.
