Internet Of Things: Samsung SmartThings IoT Platform Is Open And Compatible; Possible Applications

An open platform for Internet of Things, Samsung SmartThings, exists because of seven multitalented cofounders, who, after envisioning the platform, did not take long to become a reality.

Many see its potential as it raised $2 million from more than 5,000 backers on Kickstarter in 2012. So did Samsung Group, which acquired it in 2014.

Though the Internet of Things at times do not work as planned, it is getting better moving forward. The key is compatibility and things are heading to that direction, said Betanews.

Now, Internet of Things platform, Samsung SmartThings is compatible with more than 200 devices, and the number is still increasing. The SmartThings community has 15,000 developers, to whom the IoT platform cofounders rely and persistently reach out to foster developers to continuously expand the ecosystem.

Leading this initiative is SmartThings co-founder and VP of Community and Developer Advocacy, Ben Edwards, who believes in the developer community as essential to make the ever expanding ecosystem.

Speaking to SamsungTomorrow, he said an open IoT platform will be easy for developers to get involved.

He encourages developers to see the Internet of Things vision and trends so the platform is better equipped, wanting them not to focus on simple applications and devices but on service platforms like Samsung SmartThings.

"Everything is going to be connected, even things we wouldn't necessarily think of. Tables and chairs and couches and buildings, for example. They're all going to be connected in ways that we can't even imagine right now." Edwards stated.

The idea may not be something that can happen immediately. Edwards mentioned, for example, smart dining room tables.

"Imagine, a table display pops up that is unique to what I'm interested in because it knows that I am sitting here," he said. "Across the table in another seat, the display might show something different. Or, maybe there's not a display at all. But the table knows that I have to catch a certain metro train, so it might notify me that it's time to leave."
