Baek Ji Young, the singer known as the "Queen of the OST" for her contributions to the soundtracks of so many kdramas, is the latest celebrity to take a stand against Internet rumors and malicious comments.
The cruel comments were made after she suffered a miscarriage in June. She was four months pregnant.
On Oct. 3, the Seoul Metropolitan Police released a statement saying that the singer requested an investigation in August.
"We are currently investigating the case," said a police spokesperson at the Suseo Police Station.
Baek's agency, WS Entertainment provided the police with evidence.
"As soon as the investigation is over, we will prosecute all the netizens that made false and defamatory comments," said a WS Entertainment representative.
If losing her baby was not bad enough, Baek Ji Young had to endure comments saying that her smoking led to the miscarriage and it was all her fault. They also accused her of having an abortion, despite public statements by the singer and her actor husband Jung Suk Won about how happy they were to become parents.
"Do the people who made such sarcastic comments have any common sense," said her agency's representative. "Do they have any idea how a woman who has suffered a miscarriage might feel? We will proactively take action against the netizens who left Baek Ji Young and her family with deep emotional scars."
The agency stated that they are not only filing charges for Baek Ji Young's sake but to protect other celebrities from slander and malicious comments.
"We will charge them so that we can protect not only ourselves, but other celebrities who get hurt such words. We hope to prevent any more potential criminals from arising, and hope to correct them in this matter."
While it is important to let netizens express themselves there is no need to go so far.
"At first we did not respond aggressively," said her agency representative. "However, before she is a celebrity, Baek Ji Young is first and foremost a woman. And to think that a woman who recently went through a miscarriage would be cursed and have to bear insults and libel is outrageous. Not only that, these people did the unthinkable when they uploaded gruesome photo-shopped pictures of the baby that was miscarried."
The soundtracks that Baek Ji Young contributed songs to include "Iris," "Secret Gadren," "The Princess' Man," "The Greatest Love, "Rooftop Prince," Gu Family Book" and "Good Doctor."
