It was not easy for singer Baek Ji Young to talk about her miscarriage on the SBS show "Healing Camp" but there were a few things that she had to make clear.
"Unlike relationships or marriage, the pain of a miscarriage is not something I can easily talk about," said the singer, who is often called the "queen of the OST" for her contribution to the soundtracks of so many hit dramas.
When she experienced a tragic miscarriage only weeks after marrying actor Jung Suk Won, she also had to endure cruel negative comments from netizens that blamed her for causing the miscarriage.
Netizen comments said that the singer miscarried because she smoked, worked too hard and tried to have a first baby when she was 38.
But the singer and her actor husband had publicly expressed their eagerness to become parents and did everything they could to prevent any problems. According to her doctors, a miscarriage can happen to anyone and at any time.
"The miscarriage wasn't because of overwork or anything," said Baek Ji Young.
Baek had reached the four-month mark in her pregnancy, a time when the risk of miscarriage usually lessens.
"I started to suddenly gain a lot of weight for the first time," said Baek. "My doctor recommended some exercise, so I swam as well as doing special exercises for pregnant women. In the end, I think it was because of an infection. They say that a miscarriage can happen at any time. When I asked my doctor at the university hospital why it happened, even he couldn't give me an exact answer."
No one in her family blamed her for the miscarriage and they remained very supportive.
"My husband was really there for me and I could really rely him," she said, beginning to cry. "While in the hospital, he made me laugh a lot."
This week the Seoul Metropolitan Police reported that the singer had requested an investigation into the online remarks and her agency, WS Entertainment had given them evidence.
"As soon as the investigation is over, we will prosecute all the netizens that made false and defamatory comments," said a WS Entertainment representative.
While netizens should be free to comment, there was no reason for the cruel and false remarks.
"Do the people who made such sarcastic comments have any common sense," said her agency's representative. "Do they have any idea how a woman who has suffered a miscarriage might feel?"
The agency stated that they are not only filing charges for Baek Ji Young's sake but to protect other celebrities from slander and malicious comments.
