Sony has released its highest-end and most recent smartphone so far, the Xperia Z5 Premium. It is a 4K smartphone, the first in the world.
Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is powered by a Snapdragon 810 CPU, paired with 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage expandable with a microSD card, 3430mAh battery with Qualcomm quick Charge, 23MP main camera and 5MP front camera.
Z5 Premium also completes the Z5 lineup in size. There is the Z5 Compact at 4.6 inches, Z5 at 5.2 and now the Premium handset at 5.5 inches. It is Sony's high-end phone in major sizes.
On its first impressions, Android Central said it is quite weird that the Z5 Premium has a better feel in the hand than its smaller sibling 5.2-inch Xperia Z5. As a big phone with much bottom and top bezel, the tech side said it could be that they are already used to big-sized phones.
More about Sony Xperia Z5 Premium 4K. According to Trusted Reviews, the 4K display means it has a 3840 x 2160 resolution, which standard is recognized as "ultra high definition" or UHD. It is just like a mix of four iPhone 6s Plus displays.
The QHD displays nowadays as in LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, are already sharp, but the screen of Z5 Premium does not always display 4K but most of the time, 1080p.
A well-recorded 4K footage with 4K TVs can make a 2D content look nearly 3D because 4K has a bit more of a "3D" sense than 1080p.
Trusted Reviews said the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium 4K display is used on Sony photo and video apps. The rest are rendered at 1080p. That means, most places where the user heads for 4K video are blocked. For instance, Netflix and YouTube do not stream at 4K. Even games are largely 1080p and they do not have the requirements to render at 4K even if Sony Xperia Z5 allows it.
Hence, 4k in smartphones for now has missing links, and there are no virtual reality applications for the expanded resolution yet. VR is one where the bonus pixels would be very useful. As of now, VR takes look pixelated and Google Cardboard and Samsung Gear VR use the smartphone's display, which are limited to 2560 x 1440 pixels maximum.
Sony is not to blame for services not delivering 4K content to mobile devices yet, and this could the case for a long time. However, for making a smartphone that can actually use 4K quality video right now, that is really cool of Sony.
