Han Ji Min's Reveals What She Did to Play her Character in 'Miss Baek'

As obtained by an outlet, Han Ji Min had to learn smoking to portray her role as Baek Sang Ah.

In the thriller movie, her character is an unsociable ex-convict who experiences abuse from her mother and ends up in an orphanage.

To exude the characteristics and qualities of Baek Sang Ah, Han Ji Min had to imagine her unhappy childhood, not to mention learning how to smoke.

During the interview, the actress got candid when host Yoo Jae Seok said that she "tried smoking all kinds of cigarettes and spitting for the role at that time" to portray the image of her character. The top actress recalled her experience filming and preparations for the movie.

Han Ji Min revealed that since there's no time for her to practice, she would observe and ask people who smoke.

"I met people who smoked cigarettes and told them, 'Please show me how. I also went to the corner and said, 'I'll try spitting,'" she shared.

At the time, she had doubts that she wouldn't be able to join "Miss Baek" if she "couldn't show some differences."

Han Ji Min shared that she "kept biting the cigarette" and would have it in her daily activities to prove her versatility and dedication as an actress. "Even when I was washing the dishes," she added.

Years after the film was successfully released, the actress said that people around her were curious if she would quit smoking, to which she replied yes and said that she had "already quit it."

Most Korean celebrities go to extreme lengths to adapt to their roles.

Besides Han Ji Min, several Kdrama actors and actresses are required to learn to smoke for their roles.

For instance, Jun Ji Hyun, in "A Man Who Was Superman," needed to puff a cigarette for a particular scene despite not having experience with smoking. The same goes for Son Ye Jin for the movie "Open City," where she took the role of leader of a Yakuza-backed organization.

Han Ji Min's 'Miss Baek' Had Difficulties Finding Investors

On tvN's "You Quiz on the Block," Han Ji Min shared the struggles before "Miss Baek" was released in theaters.

The actress mentioned that at the time, the officials had "a hard time as they couldn't find an investor or distributor for the movie."

Besides having Han Ji Min as a lead star and being a top actress, the film's plot centers around abuse, which might affect her image.

"As I played that role, many investors were like 'Let's drop out,' and the release schedule was delayed because we couldn't decide on a distributor," she added.

Fortunately, the film got a green light and was released in October 2018.

Interestingly, "Miss Baek" scored various achievements, including ​​Best Actress for Han Ji Min, Best Supporting Actress for Kwon So Hyun, and Best New Director at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards.
