'Exhuma' Makes Successful Global Premiere at 74th Berlin International Film Festival

Occult-mystery movie "Exhuma" is making a buzz outside its home country after it was screened at the 74th Berlin International Festival. It was invited to the esteemed Forum section and premiered on Friday evening (February 16).

Director Jang Jae Hyun was present as the movie was immediately followed by a question and answer session. It has been said that international audiences are raving about their experience watching "Exhuma."

Fabian Tietke, the person who hosted the Q&A segment, praised the film and its stars.

"The actors are all impressive and seem to have a deep understanding of their professions in the movie."

The director of the movie shared that it was his third occult horror film. He is not interested in ghosts or spirits, but according to him, sometimes he wishes they existed because he believes they represent a deeper element of what makes people human.

Jang Jae Hyun added that even though people can't see ghosts, the concept of souls sets people apart from machines and holds a certain fascination for him. With that in mind, it is what made him choose the genre.

He also elaborated that "Exhuma" may have showcased a dark world, but it is actually the light that shines within it that is the most powerful. The theme of searching for light in darkness is something he tries to capture in all his works.

International Audience Praises 'Exhuma'

After its world premiere, the foreign viewers shared their sentiments and they have nothing but praise for "Exhuma" and its cast.

  • "It is wonderfully directed with a great cast. It is a great expansion of the occult universe."
  • "'Exhuma' shows the direction in which Korean occult films should go."
  • "I got goosebumps while watching the movie. You will be satisfied with this work."
  • "It is a mystery thriller that maintains its speed and suspense from beginning to end. The subtle special effects don't overwhelm the actress on screen and add to the suspense by leaving room for imagination."

"Exhuma" is expected to hit the cinemas this February 22, presented by the movie production Showbox.

In addition, according to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network, "Exhuma" ranked first in overall reservation. It has been said that it already received advance reservations of 125,453 as of 1:10 pm (KST) on February 19.

This is the highest advance reservation volume for a Korean film in 2024. Actors Choi Min Sik, Yoo Hae Jin, Kim Go Eun, and Lee Do Hyun will appear in this project.
