Former daughter-in-law of a Chaebol family, the actress Choi Jung Yoon faces a hard new life after her divorce that sees her coping with money problems.
Choi made headlines in 2011 when she married the son of the former vice chairman of E-Land Group — a major conglomerate with hospitality, retail, and fashion interests.
The couple was in the spotlight over their extravagant life, which consisted of a mansion in Seoul and a lifestyle of privilege.
However, the couple's fairytale life quickly began to fall apart in 2017 when his husband became embroiled in stock manipulation allegations.
The couple divorced and finalized their affairs in 2021 after ten years of marriage, leaving Choi with the burden of raising the children without the partner, but realistically also without the financial stability the partnership benefitted from.
Choi, who has been divorced for five years, said in an interview: "When I got divorced, I was worried about how to raise my child."
She was struggling to make ends meet in her home city of Seoul, where she could not find acting jobs due to the pandemic ransacking the entertainment industry.
Choi tried to find a stable part-time job working as a server but struggled because of time and age bias. After going through with it, she said:
"I just fell to the floor." Unfazed, she persevered in finding another way to earn a living — taking courses to become a real estate agent and trying her hand at live commerce.
Choi, meanwhile, has been candid about her financial problems despite her adverse social media backlash. "Yes, I ran out of money.
This is why I am attempting monetization. "What's the problem?" Replying to haters, she said that she was determined to provide for her daughter.
Choi has been through a lot, from a glamorous life to a resilient one as she moves on.
She is determined to continue raising her daughter, saying "There's nothing I wouldn't do in the world for my child" as she comes to terms with her new reality.
