Ellen Degeneres tweeted a star studded selfie containing Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Jared Leto, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Lupita Nyong'o, Kevin Spacey, and Channing Tatum at the Oscars this past Sunday. Degeneres handed Bradley Cooper a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phone to take what is now known as the world's most famous selfie. The tweet (@TheEllenShow) was retweeted more than 700,000 times in less than 30 minutes and apparently "broke" Twitter. As of late Monday, the photo had been retweeted 3 million times. Oscars host Degeneres confirmed the technological break on stage at the Academy Awards, saying "We crashed and broke Twitter. We made history."
Samsung, a major Academy Awards sponsor, was never mentioned by Degeneres, verbally nor on the tweet through which she presented the epic photo. According to the LA Times, the South Korean electronics company was using their Oscars' sponsorship to introduce its "One Samsung" campaign, a suite of devices which includes the Galaxy Note Pro Tablet, the Galaxy S5 phone, the Gear 2 smartwatch, and an ultra high-definition television. What the cost of their sponsorship was is unknown, but it is projected to be in the millions, in exchange for which they got more than 5 minutes of airtime to display their products.
While Samsung said in an emailed statement to the LA Times that it was "delighted to see Ellen organically incorporate the device into the selfie moment that had everyone talking." Danny Sullivan, founding editor of Search Engine Land, was quoted saying, "Pretty nice placement, and I wouldn't be surprised if we see Samsung working in that it was used for making that record-breaking tweet happen."
