Angelina Jolie, 38, reveals that she plans to undergo more surgery to prevent her chances of developing breast cancer. "There's still another surgery to have, which I haven't yet," the "Maleficent" actress told Entertainment Weekly. Jolie is on the latest cover of the magazine. "I'll get advice from all these wonderful people who've I've been talking to, to get through the next stage."
The mother of six reassures that she is doing great after undergoing a double mastectomy last year. Jolie made the difficult decision of getting the surgery after she found out that she was a carrier of a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which highly increases a woman's risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers. She wrote about her decision in piece for the New York Times last year, were she reported that her physicians estimated that the actress had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65 percent risk of getting it, on average.
Jolie tells EW, "I'm great!...I'm very happy I made the decision. I was very fortunate to have great doctors and very, very fortunate to have a good recovery and have a project like Unbroken to have something to be really focused on, to be getting healthy for, and to be able to just get right back to work."
"I feel very, very close-much closer-to other women, and women who are going through the same thing," Jolie says. "Wherever I go, usually I run into women and we talk about health issues, women's issues, breast cancer, ovarian cancer. I've talked to men about their daughters' and wives' health. It makes me feel closer to other people who deal with the same things and have either lost their parents or are considering surgeries or wondering about their children...The reason that I wrote it was to try to communicate and help and connect with other women and other families going through the same thing. And...I was very, very moved by all the support and kindness from so many people."
Jolie has been keeping busy, aside from being a mother to her six children with partner Brad Pitt. The actress has Disney's Maleficent coming out on May 30, 2014. "Maleficient" is Disney's new and evil interpretation of the classic story Sleeping Beauty. Jolie is currently editing her film "Unbroken," the true-life tale of World War II heroism that she also directed.
