Bob Welch died in his Seal Beach home in California Monday night. According to their reports, the local police responded to a call for medical aid from his home. When they arrived, they found Welch dead in the bathroom area. An autopsy is underway and the results of the autopsy have still not been revealed.
A's general manager, Billy Beane, said, "This is a sad day for the entire A's organization. Those of us who knew Bob as a teammate and a friend will miss him greatly. My condolences go out to his family."
Welch was the pitcher for the Dodgers for nearly a decade, from 1978 to 1987. He was then traded to Oakland at the end of the season and ended his career in baseball in 1994. Between his time with the A's and the Dodgers, Welch went 211-146 and was able to make it to two All-Star teams and got to pitch in five consecutive World Series. His most memorable pitch in the tales of the Dodgers-Yankees rivalry was when he got to strike out Reggie Jackson in the 2nd game of 1978 World Series.
Dodger president and CEO Stan Kasten said in his statement, "The Los Angeles Dodgers are saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Welch. He was one of the greatest competitors to wear the Dodger uniform. Dodger fans will always remember his confrontation with Yankee great Reggie Jackson in Game 2 of the 1978 World Series, when the 21-year-old rookie struck out Jackson to end the game."
