LG has just announced its rollable 18-inch OLED panel, as well as its 18-inch transparent OLED dispay. LG says that they now have the basic technologies needed for the devices to have a flexible or transparent high quality displays.
The highly-flexible OLED panel sports a HD quality resolution of 1200X810. The panel's curved radius is 30R. This means that the panel can be rolled up to a radius of 3cm without comromising the function of the display. LG says in its press release that LG Display could bring rollable televisions with more than 50 inches to the market in the future. While this feature may be very interesting to many, the practicality of such devie is yet to be known.
LG says that they used high molecular substance-based polyimide film for the backplane of the flexible panel instead of conventional plastic in order to achieve the maximum curving radius. The polyimide film help maintain the thickness of the panel low, improving its flexibility.
The LG transparent OLED panel boasts 30 percent transmittance and is proud of its LG's transparent pixel design technology. LG says that they have lowered the haze with circuit devices and film components to a level of 2 percent. Accrding to the press release, this new panel offers significantly improved transmittance, considering that the transmittance of existing transparent LCD panels is around 10 percent.
In-Byung Kang, Senior Vice President and Head of the R&D Center at LG Display, said that the company is confident of improving the display quality, as well as the flexibility of such displays in a span of three years.
LG's display manufacturers is one of the biggest contributors to the smartphone production industry. In fact, this company has a very good reputaton in coming up with real eye-catching displays. We can expect many devices to be released with highly-flexible displays.
