Which smartphone is the ideal purchase for consumers? We pit the Nokia Lumia Icon against the Blackberry Z3 to see which is better.

In terms of design and display, the Blackberry Z3 has a 5 inches screen that renders a resolution of 540x960pixels and 221ppi. Also, the display claims to support 16M colors and it has light and proximity sensors. Its dimensions are: 140×72.8×9.3 mm and it weighs 164 grams.

The Nokia Lumia Icon features a 5 inches display as well, but it’s AMOLED, and supports a much higher resolution of 1080x1920pixels and 441ppi. It also has light and proximity sensors, and its screen is scratch resistant. The smartphone is 3 grams heavier than its rival, and its dimensions are: 137x71x9.8 mm.

For the hardware and OS, the Blackberry Z3 has a powerful 1.2GHZ dual core Krait, backed by a Qualcomm MSM8230 Snapdragon 400 chipset and an Adreno 305 GPU and hosts 8GB of internal memory which is expandable up to 32GB. It runs on the BlackBerry 10.2.1 OS and it has 1.5GB of RAM

Meanwhile, the Nokia Lumia Icon has a 2.2GHz quad core Krait 400 processor, based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset and has an Adreno 330 GPU. The built in storage is unexpandable and has a capacity of 32GB. It runs on the Microsoft Windows Phone 8 OS, which is upgradeable to the 8.1 version and has 2GB of RAM.

For battery and camera specs, the Blackberry Z3 has a non-removable battery that last 15 hours and a half of talk time, thanks to its 2500mAh battery. In stand by mode, it lasts for up to 384 hours and last 84 hours while listening to music.

The Nokia Lumia Icon has a removable battery with the capacity of 2420mAh (BV-5QW) which allows up to 16 hours of talk time on 3G and it stand by mode it lasts 432hours.

The Blackberry model sports a 5MP rear camera which provides 2592х1944pixels, autofocus, LED flash, geo tagging and video recording at 1080p. The front camera is 1.1MP.

The Nokia model however, has 20MP rear camera with 4992х3744pixels, Carl Zeiss optics, PureView technology, autofocus, dual capture, optical image stabilization, dual-LED flash, 1.12 µm pixel size, 1/2.5” sensor size etc. Users can record great videos at 1080p@30fps with optical stabilization. The front camera is 1.2MP, which can record videos at 720p.

The Blackberry Z3 costs around $250 and it’s available in India and other 6 countries, while the Nokia Lumia Icon is available via Verizon Wireless and it costs between $49.99 (two year contract) – $549.99.
