Legendary has tapped Tom Hiddleston for 'Skull Island,' a spinoff film based on King Kong's mysterious home and the dangerous creatures living in it, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

Indie-director Jordan Vogt-Robertz of 'Kings of Summer' will be helming the origin story. Max Borenstein, who wrote the screenplay for 'Godzilla,' will be penning the script for the film.

With a set release date for November 4, 2016, Legendary surprised its Comic Con panel last July with a teaser for 'Skull Island.' At that time, however, Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) was the rumored headliner for the film.

The Comic Con trailer reportedly featured a vintage looking footage of a stormy night in a jungle with occasion glimpses of creatures.

"We penetrated deeper and deeper into the very heart of darkness," a voiceover said before a clear shot of King Kong roaring and looking ferocious occupied the screen.

"Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions," Legendary said, according to Hollywood Reporter.

With Borentstein in charge with the script, speculations for a possible King Kong-Godzilla crossover have also been circulating. Does that mean fans could see the British actor in that film as well?

Tom Hiddleston in 'Skull Island' and a possible King Kong-Godzilla crossover? Now, that would a treat to fans and the public in general!

Meanwhile, fans will see him much sooner in cinemas. He will be taking on a country twang for his role as Hank Williams in a biopic for the country singer. He is reportedly spending time with Rodney Crowell to prep for filming (and singing) in Louisiana next month.

According to Entertainment Weekly, 'I Saw The Light' will be hitting cinemas in 2015. It's going to be a busy year for the British star with 'Skull Island' scheduled for release the year after that.
