Which of these devices is the better purchase? We pit the iPhone 5S against the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact to see which is better.

In terms of design and display, Both smartphones have a premium look, but with a difference. The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact has a front and back covered in glass and it has a metal strip around the edges, while the iPhone 5S has a metal back panel and edged are from metal and are portioned.

The iPhone 5S measures around 123.8×58.6×7.6 mm and weighs 112 grams. It has a smaller display of 4 inches IPS LCD that supports a resolution of 1,136x640pixels and a 326 ppi.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is 25 grams heavier than the Apple smartphone and its dimensions are 127×64.9×9.5 mm. The smartphone comes with a 4.3 inches IPS LCD HD display, with a resolution of 1,280x720pixels and 342 ppi.

For the hardware and OS, the iPhone 5S is powered by a 1.3GHz dual-core A7 processor and it has a M7 co-processor and 1GB of RAM. It runs on the Apple's iOS 7.

Meanwhile, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact has a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU and hosts 2GB of RAM. It runs on the Android 4.3 OS upgradable to the 4.4.4 (KitKat) version and has Sony's Xperia UI, but some users complained that the software is unpredictable and laggy.

For battery usage and camera specs, both smartphones have non-replaceable batteries, but even if the iPhone 5S's battery is smaller, having the capacity of 1,560mAh, it lasts longer than Sony Xperia Z1 Compact's 2,300mAh battery.

The Sony smartphone has a camera with a higher resolution of 20.7MP, but it seems that the colors was out, and even if the users set the resolution to the fullest, it keeps reverting to 8MP. The iPhone 5S however, has a camera of 8MP, but it offers saturated colors.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact 16 GB variant cost $429 in amazon.com, while the iPhone 5S 16GB variant costs $680.
