Alex from Target has been very randomly taking the world by storm with the power of one photo that's been circulating on Twitter.
Speculation that the entire Alex from Target phenomenon might be a "social experiment" has surfaced as a tech startup called Breakr has reportedly stepped forward claiming that it is responsible for the social media frenzy, according to CNN.
The CEO of Breakr reportedly stated in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday that the company took advantage of social media's "powerful fangirl demographic" to make Alex Lee, a 16-year-old Target employee from Texas, an internet sensation. Breakr reportedly claimed that they took the photo of Alex from Target and further spread the popularity of the teenager "by tweeting about it to our biggest YouTube influencers."
"It was based on looks. You put a good looking guy in front of girls, girls are going to go crazy over him," stated Breakr CEO Dil-Domine Jacobe Leonares.
Alex from Target took to Twitter to explain his stance on the company's claims.
"Apparently there is a company trying to take credit for how the pic taken of me went viral. My family and I have never heard of this company," wrote Alex, according Fox News.
He continued, "I didn't know the pic was taken or tweeted until my store manager showed me."
Regardless of how he got famous, Alex from Target was so big that he even got the attention of talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and recently made an appearance on her show.
"She [manager] showed me the actual picture and I thought it was fake," the teenager told Ellen.
He added, "And then an hour later, these random girls that I've never met before came in and showed me my Twitter page and I had like 5,000 more followers and I was just really confused."
