Google Glass Release Date Postponed For The Mass Market; Developers Withdraw Support, Look To Other Platforms; Search Engine Giant Insists Plans For Wearable Tech Is Solid And On Track

The mass-market Google Glass release date is pushed back as developers reconsider support. The official Google Glass release date has been postponed further due to waning developer support, according to a report. The search engine giant claims its not scrapping its wearable tech, but is apparently reconsidering its marketing strategy for the device.

Google Glass price is a steep $1,500, at least for the test version of the device. It has a camera, processor, and stamp-size computer screen installed on the upper left corner of the right pane.

Reports of developers withdrawing support for the wearable tech apparently forced Google to push the Google Glass release date farther. Larger developers remain on board, including Facebook, which is notable and understandable. Twitter has opted out, though.

Some are considering other platforms to work on. Tom Frencel of Little Guy Games puts it bluntly: "If there was 200 million Google Glasses sold, it would be a different perspective. There's no market at this point."

Chris O'Neill, Google Glass Head of Business Operations insists plans remains solid and on track.

"We are completely energized and as energized as ever about the opportunity that wearables and Glass in particular represent. We are as committed as ever to a consumer launch. That is going to take time and we are not going to launch this product until it's absolutely ready." (businessinsider.com)

Initial market reaction to the Google Glass is mixed. While the device is comparable to the GoPro in portability, others find it too cumbersome and awkward to wear, especially in public.

The Google Glass' price is also pretty steep; units are selling, but mostly through eBay, which isn't a good thing.

Washington-based consultant Shevetank Shah comments: "It looks super nerdy. I'm a card carrying nerd, but this was one card too many."

The Google Glass release date happened as early as August, with a mass market launch still on the drawing board.
