Since Doctor Who relaunch in 2005, fans have always been given a holiday tip with the Doctor yearly. In some situations, the Christmas Specials have been tied closely to wider story arcs like The Christmas Invasion where David Tennant was introduced, the present mystery of the Impossible Girl in The Snowmen, and Matt Smith exit in The Time of the Doctor, while others have been on and off misadventures always according to iconic winter tales like A Christmas Carol, The Doctor and The Wardrobe.

On the other hand, after the moody final act in the Doctor Who season 8 finale, the 2014 Christmas Special is entitled Death in Heaven is going to pull the double duty, blendy campy trip to the North Pole, with Nick Frost playing the Santa Claus. More exploration of the Doctor and Clara's current hopelessness, for weeks fans has been arguing how the special will be suitable into the bigger Doctor Who storyline and now the network is giving a few major details like the official poster and episode title.

Its exactly a month before Christmas, BBC has disclosed that the 2014 Christmas special will be named Last Christmas, and despite the speculations that Clara might only have a minor role, the network synopsis and episode's poster confirm the Doctor's buddy will be featured prominently.

The poster writes:

"The Doctor and Clara face their Last Christmas. Trapped on an arctic base and under attack from terrifying creatures, who are you going to call? Santa Claus!"

There were still unresolved threads in Season 8 finale that need to be answered before the Christmas Special, so in terms of balancing the drama in the holiday episode, Moffat has his work cut for him. The team has fought in the past with the same challenging drama, like season 7 rushed set up which featured, out of nowhere, Amy and Rory's marriage. So fans will have to see how the network tends to pick-up from such finale and make the bigger story threats suitable with Elves, Santa and dreaming.
