The GoPro drone kit will take user-made footage to the next level.
The GoPro drone kit is the company's venture into a larger market, with the frenzy for drones on a new high stateside. The Wall Street Journal reports a consumer-grade multi-rotor aircraft is under development, to be paired with the GoPro camera.
There's heavy competition in the drone market, according to the report, something the camera manufacturer is supposed to be part of. GoPro cameras are already being used in drones set up with mounts, but newer drones now ship out units with cameras installed by default.
There are a handful of competitors for GoPro as soon as its camera-equipped drone rolls out. China's DJI, France's Parrot, and California's 3D Robotics all have a comfortable stake in the market.
The GoPro camera is also facing strict competition with Sony and Polaroid, and the venture towards drones gives it an arm's reach over new territory. An analyst confirms GoPro is missing out on opportunities for expansion by ignoring the popularity of drone-shot videos, uploaded on the Internet.
The GoPro drone kit also gives the company credibility as more than a one-product kind of company. "They're making the GoPro money but not capturing the value of the drone."
Drones are a growing trend, especially in the US. CNET reports its popularity is causing quite a dilemma for the FAA.
"This is also a sign the drone industry itself is growing beyond its hobbyist origins as more consumers flock to lower-cost drones that are easier to fly, despite the US Federal Aviation Authority's struggle to regulate them for commercial and recreational use.
The drone industry is expected to grow to $2.2 billion by next year and $10 billion by 2025, according to industry trade group the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International. The devices have become so popular, the hit animated television show South Park dedicated an episode to them."
