Hollywood would have thought that two giant fighting robots would be a great hit but as it seemed, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim lost the battle with "Grown Ups 2" upon its first ever release, Despite its disappointing fallout on the American theaters, Another sequel is not yet being confirmed, or in talks either. However, Its worldwide success went on board where Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for a confirmed release with del Toro as a returning director and Zak Penn as a co-scriptwriter.
To those movie-goers who might have missed it, Pacific Rim is set on a troubled Earth where an inter-dimensional rift where two giant monsters named Kaiju will fight on each other to find their way to land on the Earth whilst human is left with only one defense called Jaegus which had turned out to be unbelievably big that it requires two operators to work.
Del Toro hinted that Pacific Rim 2 will focus more of the Kaiju world but in a very latest interview with Collider, the director has unlocked some more hints about the upcoming sequel, unlocking how the movie will be set and who among the characters are on the verge of coming back.
"It's a few years after the first one. It's not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after - what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It's quite a jump."
Having hinted with a real wide sypnosis, it would be quite unnecessary for Pacific Rim 2 to put the concentration on the first sequel's characters. Apparently. there's an entire planet (in addition to a new alien world) to play with and del Toro can give Mako and Raleigh a rest to give an equal opportunity for someone to be a hero, While the director didn't spilled anything on the possibility of role reprise of Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Hunnam, he is too confident to reveal two returning characters: Gottlieb and Geiszler.
"I think that two of our main characters like in the first one are Burn [Gorman] and Charlie [Day]. They are really, really - I mean, honestly, they are probably the guys I have the most fun writing along with Hannibal Chau so just from a purely selfish drive, I like writing them. I love writing for Charlie and Burn. I mean, [Burn's] in Crimson Peak for that reason, because I love working with him. You're gonna get a lot of that, but the Kaijus are very different and you're gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It's gonna be quite a different adventure."
Charlie Day's character, Newton Geiszler is to sought for due to his eagerness of understanding the world of Kaiju. Facts were becoming true when Day mentioned that del Toro's sequel plans once included Newt's fresh role of being the film's antagonist. Whether that plan is still on talks of eventualizing or not. it will definitely be quite more interesting to witness Newt's undying curiosity for Kaiju taking him not far enough to the dark side in Pacific Rim 2.
Pacific Rim 2 will hit the movie theaters on April 7, 2017.
