The new "Insurgent" trailer release has fans of the book series scratching their heads in confusion.
The new "Insurgent" trailer release on Friday gave a sneak peak on the sequel to the Veronica Roth adaptation, and initial reaction was mixed. The tease came after the heels of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1," and the similarity was understandable.
The trailer previews the events after the uprising of "Divergent," with Beatrice, Caleb, and Four (played by Shailene Woodley, Ansel Egort, and Theo James) executing an assault on Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews (played by Kate Winslet).
Fans who've read the book series were left confused and frustrated with the trailer, though. Apparently, "Insurgent" deviates from the plot of the novels, introducing a mystery box not present in the Veronica Roth series (ibtimes.com).
The box was revealed early on in the "Insurgent" trailer release, with Matthews obsessed with its secrets and ready to do anything to unlock it. Woodley's character asks Egort's: "What does Jeanine think is in that box Caleb?"
"I don't know, but she's testing Divergents, searching for the one that can open it."
The deviation from the expected storyline has fans shocked, and many took to social media to vent. One Twitter user posted, in all caps:
"NOT HAPPY WITH THE INSURGENT TRAILER THEY CHANGED SO MUCH... WHATS UP WITH THAT BOX THING??? ONCE AGAIN ANOTHER SERIES RUINED."
The "Insurgent" trailer release somewhat revolved around the box, with Matthews hell-bent to capture Beatrice as the only one who can unlock it.
Beatrice and the rebelling factions team up with people who've renounced the faction system, called "The Factionless." The "Insurgent" trailer release is explosive and action-packed, compared to the "Divergent" tease.
"Insurgent" release date is slated for March 20, 2015. In related news, director Robert Schwentke is already confirmed for "Allegiant: Part 1," pegged for a March 18, 2016 release date. "Allegiant: Part 2" release date is March 24, 2017 (hollywoodreporter.com).
