"The Babadook" book on Amazon? Copies of the horror film's notorious book are now available for preorder.
Those up for real scares can now own the actual "The Babadook" book, available for preorder. The book is similar to the Annabelle doll sold as promotion to the movie of the same name, which proved to be a hit among horror movie fans.
The Babadook book is expected to be an exact replica of the one featured in the movie. "The Babadook" is an unexpected Australian thriller from writer and director Jennifer Kent, also her debut project.
The film stars Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman, a mother and her young son caught in the wake of the death of husband and father. Davis' character is struggling to deal with the tragic loss, and is about to face a sinister presence in their house that also forces her to confront her worst fears.
Kent commented on her inspiration for the movie, as well as on the seemingly harmless "Mister Babadook" book. In a New York Times interview:
"I latched onto this idea of facing the darkness. I wanted to tell the story of a woman who was forced to face the unfaceable.
I wanted something that gave me license to create my own myth. And I needed it to sound like a child had made it up. It sounds silly, but as you watch the film, that thing starts to take on some meaning and becomes more and more sinister."
Jennifer Kent and illustrator Alex Juhasz were hands-on in the creation of The Babadook book used in the film, also on the physical copies of "Mister Babadook" available for pre-order, at $80 each. The release is crowd-funded, though retail to larger sellers like Amazon is possible (cinemablend.com).
Kent and Juhasz have reached their goal of two thousand buyers for the copies, with more preorders coming in. Check out this website for information on purchase and reservation.
