James Gunn dampens hope for a "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Avengers" connection, saying they exist in different galaxies.
Marvel Comics Universe is the new playground for fan boys of the graphic novels, and with the Infinity War being staged by the discovery of the gems, the clamor for a "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Avengers" connection is at a high, particularly a crossover or team up.
Director James Gunn asserts "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" will stand on their own, though. The films are separate story arcs, and strictly speaking, aren't precursors to "The Avengers: Infinity War" movies.
"Guardians of the Galaxy" gave Marvel fans first glimpse of MCUs wider cosmic universe, and that was the intention. The Marvel Comics Universe will continue to expand, and it will take some time before fans ever get their wish of a "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Avengers" connection, even more an actual team up.
James Gunn sets the record straight in an interview via comicbook.com:
"The last thing I said was something about how the Guardians, we really are mostly focused on creating the Guardians as their own separate universe, creating the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe. It isn't all about leading towards Avengers. We're not subservient to 'The Avengers.'
Whether or not at some point, some Guardians and some Avengers meet up and meet somewhere in the world, whether it's two years from now, three years from now, four years from now, fifteen years from now...I'm not going to say. But 'Guardians of the Galaxy' does not exist as a prequel to 'Avengers 3' and '4.'
They have their own thing that they're involved in. They have their own mythos that they're involved in. They have their own stories that are equally important."
In terms of a team-up, James Gunn isn't closing the doors on a "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Avengers" connection; he prefers both teams share the universe without ever crossing paths, at least for now.
The "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" release date is slated May 5, 2017; "Avengers: Age of Ultron" comes out on theaters May 1, 2015 (screenrant.com).
