Emily Blunt in a Marvel movie isn't so bad, considering the actor held her own against Tom Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow." It turns out she's up for the Captain Marvel role as well.
The clamor for Emily Blunt in a Marvel movie has been swelling up ever since the "Edge of Tomorrow" star declined the Peggy Carter role in "Captain America." Her performance in the Tom Cruise alien-invasion flick earned her a slot in the league of female leads, though: Sigourney Weaver's Ripley in the "Alien" quadrilogy comes to mind.
It isn't surprising Marvel fans have her on the short list for the Captain Marvel movie. The upcoming adaptation departs from the male Captain Marvel in the graphic novel; Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is already confirmed to play Black Adam, the nemesis.
Marvel has yet to reveal details on casting, even the shortlist of considered actors for the part. Rumors and clamor in favor of Emily Blunt as Captain Marvel are taking root, though.
Blunt addressed the issue in an interview, during a promotional stint for Disney's "Into the Woods":
"It's funny 'cause I'm hearing this Captain Marvel thing from a lot of people. I have no official offer, whatsoever. No one's called. I don't know where the hell it's come from, in all honesty. For me, I just think that the part has gotta be awesome.
I just want to play great parts, and it's sometimes hard to find within those big superhero movies. The female parts are not usually great, but recently, they've been better. I don't know. It has to be the right thing." (collider.com)
There's a scarcity of strong female leads in the Marvel Comics Universe. Aside from notable performances in the roles of Mystique, Storm, Jean Grey, Black Widow, and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen in the upcoming "The Avengers: Age of Ultron"), Marvel movies are arguably men's territory. Emily Blunt can bring into the Marvel Universe her Full Metal B***ch performance in "Edge of Tomorrow."
On the possibility of being offered the role of Captain Marvel, Blunt commented:
"That's huge. How awesome. I love this. No one has actually called me about it, so, we'll hold our breath. [Laughs] I don't know if I'll get the call ever if I pitch it should be a musical." (screencrush.com)
Captain Marvel's release date is set on July 6, 2018.
