New ‘Star Trek 3’ Director To Change The Tone Of The Franchise? Justin Lin Of ‘Fast And Furious’ Expected To Push New Movie Further Into Blockbuster Realms, Where Few Trekkies Have Gone Before

A new "Star Trek 3" director means a different approach to the franchise, as if J.J. Abrams hasn't revamped it enough. With the "Fast and Furious" director Justin Lin confirmed to helm the next Star Trek movie, Trekkies are already anticipating changes to the two previous installments.

It's evident J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin have different approaches in directing, but what can the audience expect on the Enterprise's next adventure? Cinemablend offers a few, which is reasonable considering Justin Lin's directorial credits.

The new "Star Trek 3" director could scrap Abram's trademark lens flares for lingering shots of spacecraft and the Enterprise. While this is done to a certain extent in previous installments, the shots were merely glimpses, and are usually set against the background of outer space.

Abrams' lens flares gives a goody intergalactic feel to scenes, but Lin's knack for bragging shots in "Fast and Furious" could carry over, showcasing sick spacecraft details instead.

Lin's credits of blockbuster movies could also mean "Star Trek 3" would stray off from the adventure themes of previous films. Abrams' work was all about exploration, which were drawn and played out; the director took pages out of Steven Spielberg's playbook and owned them.

Justin Lin, on the other hand, is all about high-flying stunts and explosive scenes, which may push the new Star Trek series further into the mainstream, something Abrams' films were gradually moving towards, especially with the new cast and the rebooted story arc.

"Fast and Furious" was all about the chase, and the story was somewhat secondary. Things could go the same way with Justin at the helm of the next Star Trek, which could spell disappointment for the core fans. Of course, Lin could still cozy up to the relatively laid-back feel of the series, and follow Abram's lead instead.

"Star Trek 3" release date is slated for the summer 2016.
