The "Agent Carter" TV show may just be ABC's pinch-hitter until "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." returns from season break, but early reviews peg the protagonist Peggy Carter as a character with lasting appeal. Could the show go beyond its limited run?
Marvel fans anticipated Tuesday's premiere of the "Agent Carter" TV show for two reasons: to finally see the first good tease of the "Ant Man" movie trailer, and to see if the two-hour premiere for the show kicks off with the legs to last. ABC's new show didn't disappoint, successfully launching a secondary Marvel character; Peggy Carter held her own without Captain America (variety.com).
The show kicked off in the context of "Captain America: the First Avenger," with Chris Evans' Steve Rogers making an appearance. The episode played out with Peggy Carter struggling to be a woman in a man's world; colleagues don't take her seriously, and her good looks hardly helped.
Hayley Atwell reprises her role as Peggy Carter, transitioning from film to TV. In an interview with IGN, she explained her relationship with the characters in the new "Agent Carter" TV show, in the context of losing Captain America:
"Well, this is one of the beauties of this show and how it grows through the season. It's only been a year and she's grieving him and I think what keeps her going is he was the greatest person she ever knew - even before he took the serum and became Captain America."
The season will explore Agent Carter's involvement with Howard Stark's affairs, also his butler Jarvis. Her repeated run-ins with the latter create tension for both characters, also supplying light humor for the series (screenrant.com).
"I think it's kind of... they're forced together," says Atwell.
"They both have that wit and that satire. Their language is a game of chess back and forth. It's a great game that they play and I think they get tremendous enjoyment out of it. And their relationship grows over the season. They become very close. They also provide the comic relief of the season."
