Matt Damon’s New Bourne Movie Launches One Week Before ‘Suicide Squad’! Actor Set To Reprise Role After Paul Greengrass Confirmed To Direct; Run-In With Jeremy Renner Doubtful In Bourne 5

Matt Damon's new Bourne movie screens two weeks later than previously slated, in a supposed comfortable spot among this summer's blockbuster releases. Bourne 5 has a different story arc to "The Bourne Legacy" and will not involve any of the plot details of the Jeremy Renner movie.

Two weeks could be critical for Matt Damon's new Bourne movie, as the release date gets pushed back from July 15 to July 29, 2016. It's speculated the move was in consideration for "Star Trek 3," which opens July 8.

J.J. Abrams' first two outings on the franchise were box-office hits, but Bourne 5 isn't intimidated by the potential success of "Star Trek 3." It's likely to capitalize on a possible lukewarm response, in case Abrams' third outing doesn't deliver to expectations.

Damon was on the fence to reprise his role in the new Bourne movie; the actor had qualms with narrative details in "The Bourne Legacy," specifically the "pill program" which wiped out active operatives. That plot made it more difficult for Matt Damon's Jason Bourne and Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross to team up in a crossover of story arcs (screenrant.com).

The new movie took shape when Paul Greengrass decided to direct another Bourne installment. In an interview with E! News, Damon confirmed he was in for a comeback if Greengrass was involved, which cemented the project a couple of months ago.

"It'll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that's all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes."

The July 29, 2016 release date for Matt Damon's new Bourne movie fills in the slot for the next "Planet of the Apes" installment. Bourne 5 launches one week before the much-hyped and star-studded (Will Smith, Jared Leto) "Suicide Squad," Warner Bros. adaptation of the DC super-villain comic (latimes.com).
