Will the "Lego Batman Movie" with Will Arnett be a reunion of all Batmen come and gone?

"The Lego Movie" spinoff is confirmed for a 2017 release date, with Will Arnett reprising his role as the wisecracking Dark Knight. Writer and director of "The Lego Movie" Phil Lord posed an unusual question for Batman fans, though: does Batman always need to be miserable?

The Dark Knight story has seen plenty of adaptations, with heavy focus on his origins. The "Lego Batman Movie" will try to dampen the somber mood of the Batman movie franchise, though, which was worsened by the tortured character Christian Bale played in the last trilogy.

If anything, the "Lego Batman Movie" in 2017 will be closer to George Clooney's portrayal, but expectedly more cheerful, as Lord hinted in an interview (mtv.com).

"No spoilers. But I will say I think the movie is really exciting because it's about 'Can Batman be happy?'"

Will Arnett did the hero justice in the surprise hit of "The Lego Movie," poking fun at the character's sentimentality and self-absorption. Lord mimicked the Batman voice in the same interview:

"'Wah, I'm so rich and handsome, and women like me, and I've got a Maclaren. Something about my parents!'"

The big tease is in co-writer and co-director Chris Millers comment in the November interview with Empire, though, hinting the "Lego Batman Movie" in 2017 could be a big nod to the character.

"Rest assured that every era of Batman filmmaking will be acknowledged. There have been so many interpretations of Batman and there is so much to play with there."

The comment prompted MTV to speculate a reunion of Batmen in the spinoff, with voices from Adam West, Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, George Clooney, and Ben Affleck featured.

Chris Miller said the "Lego Batman Movie" and "Ninjago" would be unique spinoffs from "The Lego Movie," intended to stand on their own, and if possible, jumpstart their own sequels.

"So it will each have its own personality and not just be, 'Hey, remember that last movie? Here's another one just like it!' So that's been a big challenge but so far it's been going better than I expected." (screenrant.com)
