Singer and actress IU plays an icy k-pop princess in the upcoming drama "The Producers." And while she is a singer in her own right, she says that she did not model the character on herself. There are a few other female k-pop idols that she carefully studied to create her character.
At the May 11 press conference for the "Producers" she spoke about her cool and composed character Cindy and the female idols that inspired her.
"It′s awkward, but I′ve been trying to follow after the idol group members who are nearby," she said.
She then named f(x)'s Krystal Jung, 4minute's Hyuna and all the members of Girls Generation as her inspiration.
The character Cindy is described as an "ice princess" because she is aloof and keeps her feelings to herself. IU is not studying Krystal Jung, Hyuna or SNSD because she thinks they are icy and composed. IU wants to emulate their fashion savvy and performance style on stage rather than the way these singers act off stage. She thinks they are talented, attractive and fashionable.
"There are a lot of pretty people," said IU. "For example, I think Krystal′s skinny fit is really pretty, so I′ve been wondering how I can pull off that kind of look."
She also said that she wants to borrow some of their charming on-stage mannerisms and expressions.
"They′re not my friends, but I′ve been trying to study the hand gestures, and expressions of singers like Hyuna and the SNSD members, who have so much charisma on the stage."
Studying fellow singers has made her admire their talent even more.
"It′s so awkward when I wear killer-heels and try to dance with a charismatic expression on my face," said IU. "The things that Hyuna and I were born with are so different, but I am working really hard."
IU made her debut as a singer in 2008 and did not land an acting role until 2011. Her first role was playing Kim Pil Sook, a student at a performing arts school, in the drama "Dream High." Since then she has had two leading roles, playing Lee Soon Shin in "You're The Best Lee Soon Shin" and Kim Bo Tong in "Pretty Man." She continues to record songs and perform. She released the EP "A Flower Bookmark" in 2013 and had her last concert in February 2015.
"The Producers," which stars Gong Hyo Jin, Cha tae Hyun, Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Jong Kook, begins on May 15.
