Unbeknownst to many, the singer and actress has been diagnosed with somatization disorder, which hinders one's physical activities and routines due to the intense thoughts, feelings and behaviors when a person feels extremely distressed.
Joy revealed that during her early debut years, she had been very insecure about her body and face. She even took the high road to become prettier. As time passed by, Joy let go of the urge to exceed people's standards and stopped hating herself, which immensely helped in bettering her mental state.
Apart from the exercises and optimism, Joy also became mindful of what she consumes. She also tried oriental medicines to help her improve her health.

Ironically, Red Velvet Joy takes on a role of a woman who has been diagnosed with a terminal illness in the forthcoming melodrama "Only One Person" with Ahn Eun Jin, Kang Ye Won and Kim Kyung Nam. The new JTBC melodrama is set to air for the first time on December 20 at 11:00 p.m. KST.
