The Asia Artist Awards (AAA) 2024 has found a new host, actor Ryu Jun Yeol, which will take place on Dec. 27 at IMPACT Challenger Hall.

For the illustrious event, he will be accompanied by IVE's Wonyoung and ZEROBASEONE's Hanbin.

Ryu will be making his debut as an AAA MC, although he proved he has hosting skills already at this year's opening ceremony of the 2022 Busan International Film Festival.Fans and netizens, however, were so riled by this decision.

Despite this, a lot of people were upset that Ryu was picked as one of the MCs because they associated him with his scandal from a few years ago in which he publicly had a love triangle with his ex-girlfriend Hyeri and actress Han So Hee.

Critics on online community forum theqoo claim that the controversy around this incident shows Ryu is hardly a role to fill.

"It was a walk that who knows why he was given," Another called it "risky casting" in a tweet, adding "There are loads of actors coming up right now."

Others were similarly irked, noting Ryu "has the hosting chops of his co-hosts and maybe a notch less."

Ryu's appointment in the face of backlash follows a recent pattern of those with baggage getting prime spots in public life and entertainment.

The AAA is all about recognizing those who have made it big in the Asian entertainment scene, so it'll be interesting to see how Ryu handles the public eye leading up to the awards.
