Actress Park Bo Young has played drastically different characters throughout her career, but in her latest K-drama, Melo Movie, she takes on a new challenge.

As per Korea Times, Park, traditionally typed as sunny and bubbly, sheds that image for a new one: Mubee is cynical, jaded, and increasingly shows signs of emotional fortress-building. Her latest portrayal is gaining praise for showing how versatile actress Park is.

In a recent interview with the Korean outlet, Park said that playing her character allowed her to incorporate a different side of herself.

"I used to feel trapped, thinking I had to be cheerful every time I interacted with people," she said. "But through playing Mubee, I learned that it's okay not to be bright all the time. It helped me accept that side of myself."

Mubee is a somber character, so Park also significantly changes her appearance by lowering her naturally high-pitched voice.

She explained that keeping this deeper sound takes some work and sometimes helps.

Park explained, "Since my voice is quite high, I focused on keeping my tone lower. Every time my natural pitch slipped out, the director helped me adjust."

While the following work has been intense, Park feels that the experience has been rewarding and transformative. "Over the years, I've tried different ways to improve my mindset—writing gratitude journals and setting yearly goals like 'love myself more than I did last year,'" she said.

"Now, I've learned to tell myself, 'You're doing fine just the way you are,' and that has helped me feel much healthier inside."

Melo Movie was released on Feb. 14, KST, and is currently available on Netflix.
