MWC 2014 Day Three Recap; 1% Of Smartphone Market, First Time Smartphone Users; Low Budget Firefox For $25

WC 2014 Day 3 recap is really about budget phones. The Samsung Galaxy S5 was what everyone wanted to see in Barcelona and they did on the first day of the Mobile World Congress 2014.

Apart from the S5, analysts say that Barcelona 2014 was all about low cost smartphones. This accounts for the 1% of people who cannot afford top notch smartphones made by Apple or Android.

As Jessica Dolcourt wrote in a CNET review, the Mobile World Congress will always have its fair share of high-end, gee-whiz devices and crazy concepts, but apart from the high-end Samsung Galaxy S5, MWC 2014 belongs to the humble low-cost phone.

That might be startling because many users are not aware of the 1% being in the bottom of the smartphone ladder.

Unlike previous MWC's, this year saw many handset makers going after the next 1 billion by hosting conferences and sticking to their marketing push. Presenting low cost phones like the Nokia X was about first time smartphone owners. This made the show quite inspiring and a change from previous years because we have been hearing about Apple and Samsung for a while now; the Blackberry's too.

An analysis of Nokia X on Android puts together the feel and look of an Asha combined with a Windows Phone. Nokia X is an entry level phone with low-memory and this series of phones can sell for 89, 99, and 109 Euros. Nokia is still dedicated to the Windows Phone. Incidentally, Nokia's phone segment is under a sell-off to the Redmond star, Microsoft. It is interesting to note that Nokia released 5 phones, none of which are Lumia models. This suggests that Nokia is going back to humble beginnings, when it sold the most basic phones.

The MWC 2014 also took us through the Firefox OS and its share of Alcatel and ZTE designs and Hauawei as a partner. A reference design for Firefox was also a turning point of the MWC. The Firefox starts $25 for the smartphone. You can't beat that, Can you?
