After actress Lee Ji Ah spoke about her secret marriage to k-pop icon Seo Taiji on the show "Healing Camp," his company felt compelled to issue a statement, clarifying and also denying some of the things she said.
The couple married secretly and lived in America while they were married. The public only learned about their marriage after they filed for divorce.
When the news was made public, the "Thrice Married Woman" star and screenwriter said that for 10 days she stayed inside and stared at the wall.
"For about four months I did not come out of my house," she said. But what was even more sad was that I was already used to doing that."
This made it seem as if the marriage forced the actress to hide herself away.
"The love that I had chosen was a secretive one," she said. "I couldn't tell anyone."
However, Seo Taiji and Company said that was not so. The reason the couple lived in America was so that they could go out in public and he would not be recognized.
"When they were in America, they spent time traveling, eating out and shopping," said the statement. "The biggest reason they lived in America was because it was the place where they could live freely. They traveled to various places and lived ordinary lives."
Lee Ji Ah's older sister introduced her 16-year-old sister to the singer at a concert. Lee says they lived together secretly.
According to the agency, they did not live together before marrying. After the couple had known each other for three years, Seo Taiji decided to retire from the music industry and move to America. It was then, after she was a legal adult, that they decided to get married.
Lee Ji Ah says that the need for secrecy meant she did not see her family for seven years.
"I finally contacted them after about seven years," she said on "Healing Camp. "At that time it just had to be like that. I chose to live an abnormal life as Seo Taiji wanted me to and at that time I thought I was protecting our love by doing so."
His side said that Lee Ji Ah's parents knew they were dating.
"Like other ordinary men and women, the two received the permission from their parents to date and traveled back and forth between the families."
And Seo Taiji and Company disputes the claim that she did not see her family for a while.
"While they lived in America, they invited both of their parents, families, relatives and friends to their home in America and spent time together. They didn't announce the marriage to the public under mutual agreement but many people around them knew about the marriage. Due to an unfortunate event, she couldn't contact her parents for a while starting at some point but the reason behind that can only be answered by her."
His company did say that for the singer, their break-up was a painful memory.
"Life in America happened a long time ago for Seo Taiji but it is also a part of his painful memory. He also respects the pain of the other person. The reason Seo Taiji remained silent until now is because he felt responsible for the time they spent together in the past. We hope that these facts will no longer be distorted and lead to a one-sided condemnation."
There's always a certain amount of "he said, she said" when a couple breaks up. And probably some of what each party remembers is part of the truth.
