New Korean films are released this summer with the hopes of attracting the moviegoers to hit cinemas and save the film industry that was hit hard by the pandemic. During summer, people enjoy going out and this is also the season when most films make it to the country's box office.
Three big-budget films open up in this summer and hopes to make it on the box office this year. It was reported by the Korean Film Council that the movie "Steel Rain 2: Summit" which was released on July 29 reached a smashing 222,188 viewers.
The film features a fictional kidnapping of leaders from Korea and the United States by the North Korean nuclear-powered submarine. The veteran actors Jung Woo-Sung, Kwak Do Won, and Yoo Yeon Seok star in the movie. It's also notable that the film cast two of the main leads from the 2017 political action thriller "Steel rain." If you're wondering, the recent movie "Steel Rain: Summit" is not a sequel of its predecessor.
"Steel Rain 2: Summit" attracted more moviegoers while "Peninsula" descended to second place. On its first day, it attracted 73,884 viewers. The total count of the audience who watched the movie now stands at 3,078,416 viewers.
Meanwhile, in one of his interviews, the seasoned actor Jung Woo Sung shared his thoughts about his experience while making the film. He mentioned that he enjoyed the movie and was happy to work with director Yang Woo Suk.
The actor also emphasized that there are many series about superheroes but in the film "Steel Rain" - it's a totally unique material and genre. The actor's character is the president of South Korea, and in the posters, you can see his humane expression through his eyes.
According to the actor, the first and second have different stories. In the first movie, it deals and explains the information about the countries surrounding the Korean Peninsula. The second one, however, brings to the viewers underwater with submarine action scenes.
For the actor, it was interesting to play the part and see the leaders of the two Koreas and the US locked try to outweigh each other while confined in such a small place. The scene was breathtaking for him, and he also notes that the director brilliantly carried it well.
The newest film is gaining attention since "Steel Rain 2: Summit" brings out a heavy message through the words and lines of President Han Kyung Jae (Jung Woo Sung). For the actor, "The movie brings out something without force. It can be a question or an answer. I think it's our job to decipher what the movie's meaning is."
As for director Yang Woo Sook, in the first movie "Steel Rain," was based on our concerns about the Korean Peninsula's issue and the arguments of overseas experts. But the prequel covered issues concerning war and South Korea's nuclear armament. The "Steel Rain 2: Summit" talks about the internal collapse of North Korea and peaceful denuclearization.
