Trevor Noah made a smooth debut in "The Daily Show" on Monday night but had mixed responses from critics.
Noah who is replacing Jon Stewart as a host in the "The Daily Show" had a smooth sailing through his first episode. The 31-year-old South African comedian who is well known for his stand-up comedies had been in the show himself couple of times as correspondent with Stewart, according to BBC.
Stewart hosted the show for 16 long years and once after he stepped down, Noah was appointed to replace the most admired and inspirational host.
Trevor Noah's "The Daily Show Debut"
The Deadline noted that though Noah's interview was inoffensive it was mostly flat. "No memories of Stewart and his storied reign have been usurped or replaced," noted The Hollywood Reporter, "Nor, however, have they been sullied." Daniel Feinberg added, "The best and most honest thing you can say about Monday's premiere is: 'He didn't break it.' He also didn't try to."
Noah kicked off with a joke as he began the show. The comedian said that he grew in the dusty streets of South Africa with just two dreams in life, one was to host "The Daily Show" and the second was to have an indoor toilet. He added that he now has both but he is got comfortable with only one of them then.
Trevor Noah Paid Tribute To Jon Stewart
Noah paid tribute to his predecessor that "Jon Stewart was more than just a late-night host." "He was often our voice, our refuge and in many ways, our political dad. And it's weird because dad has left. And now it feels like the family has a new stepdad -- and he's black, which is not ideal," he added.
Noah's show received 29,397 tweets as per Neilsen TV rating among which 14,000 of them contained emoticons. About 31 percent of the emoticons were of love and 26 percent were congratulatory, according to LATimes.
